Several environmental and mechanical factors contribute to foundation instability. Soil moisture levels are a primary driver, as both excessive water and prolonged dryness alter the soil's consistency and strength. When soil becomes saturated, it gains weight and can compress, while dry soil loses volume and may fracture, both of which affect how the foundation supports the structure.

Poor site drainage is another major contributor. When water accumulates near a home’s perimeter, it infiltrates the soil and weakens its load-bearing capacity. Bowing walls, where vertical surfaces curve inward, are a clear indicator of significant pressure from soil expansion.
