This uneven reveal indicates that the door has tilted downward on one side.

Additionally, if the door swings open by itself or fails to close properly, this points to a loss of vertical alignment. The bottom edge may also drag across the floor, especially if the floor has recently been upgraded or if new carpet has been installed. These signs collectively indicate that the door is no longer hanging plumb and requires corrective action.

It is also important to note that a door may appear to be out of alignment due to environmental factors such as temperature or humidity changes. However, consistent movement at the hinges during a manual lift test confirms mechanical loosening rather than environmental causes.

Tightening Hinge Screws as a First Response

The simplest and most immediate fix for a sagging door is to inspect and tighten all hinge screws. Start by opening the door and examining each screw, particularly those on the upper hinge and any that protrude from the hinge. Screws that spin when turned indicate that the surrounding wood has worn down, reducing their grip on the frame.

Use a screwdriver with moderate torque to gently tighten each screw. Avoid using high-powered drills, as excessive force can damage the wood or cause the screw to strip further. After tightening, close the door and check for alignment. Often, this simple adjustment can resolve most sagging issues without any further intervention.

Using Longer Screws to Restore Alignment

One of the most effective methods for correcting a sagging door is replacing a short hinge screw with a longer one. Factory-installed screws are typically only 3/4 to 1 inch long and may only secure the surface of the jamb. A longer screw, such as a 2.5-inch or 3-inch wood screw, can penetrate deeper into the wall framing behind the jamb, effectively pulling the hinge side back into position.

To implement this fix, remove one screw from the upper hinge attached to the jamb. Then, carefully insert the longer screw into the hole, ensuring it is driven straight and does not damage the surrounding wood. As the screw tightens, the hinge side will often shift inward, lifting the opposite corner of the door and restoring balance.

It is critical to check the door’s fit frequently during the tightening process. Over-tightening can cause the door to become too rigid or create new misalignments. Small, incremental adjustments typically yield the best results.

Repairing Stripped Screw Holes

When hinge screws no longer tighten securely, the wood fibers inside the screw hole have likely worn away. This condition, known as stripping, compromises the screw’s ability to grip the frame. In such cases, simply driving a new screw into the hole will not provide a lasting solution.

For more severe damage, a hardwood dowel should be used. Drill a slightly larger hole to match the dowel, apply wood glue, insert the dowel, and trim it flush with the surface. Pre-drilling a pilot hole ensures the screw can be reinstalled without damaging the dowel or surrounding wood.

In some cases, minor adjustments can be achieved without altering the frame or replacing screws. Thin shims made of cardboard or specialized hinge shims can be placed behind a hinge leaf to subtly shift the door’s position. These shims allow for fine-tuning of alignment without removing or replacing any structural components.

Shimming the lower hinge can lift the latch side slightly, reducing rubbing at the top corner. Shimming the upper hinge may alter the reveal differently, helping to balance the top and bottom edges of the door. Even a thin shim can produce a noticeable improvement in fit and function.

This method is ideal for doors that only slightly misalign or for those where a full screw replacement is not desired. It offers a reversible and low-risk approach to door adjustment.

Recognizing When Structural Settling Is the Cause

Sometimes, a door’s misalignment is not due to hinge wear but to broader structural movement within the building. Signs of significant settling include multiple doors sticking, diagonal cracks in drywall, sloping floors, or windows that no longer operate smoothly. These indicators suggest that the entire frame has shifted over time.

While minor settling is common in older homes and may stabilize naturally, significant movement can compromise the integrity of the structure. In such cases, a professional structural assessment is recommended to evaluate whether repairs or foundation work are needed.
